Iran Tests New AD-08 ‘Majid’ Short-Range Air Defense System
The test of the new defense system took place in a large-scale air defense exercise called “Defenders of Velayat Skies 1400”, which was jointly conducted by the Iranian army and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). According to the IRIB News Agency, General Rahimzadeh stated that the air defense exercise was conducted to construct secure air defense layers to protect Iran’s sensitive and vital areas, as well as its air borders.
The test footage of the AD-08 ‘Majid’ air defense system, which was tested in the exercise, was provided by Iranian military correspondents. The video demonstrates how an unmanned aerial vehicle is eliminated using the ‘Majid’ air defense system, which is mounted on the Iranian-made Aras-2 new type armored 4×4 vehicle.
The Majid air defense system, according to Iranian sources, can carry between 4 and 8 missiles. It was also reported that because the system is integrated with the Kashef-99 radar, it can enhance its target detection range up to 30 kilometers and uses electro-optics.
It is estimated that the new air defense system might well be exported to Iran’s allies and conflict zones in the Middle East as well. If these estimates are true, the ‘Majid’ air defense system is quite likely to pose a threat to drones and helicopters in both Yemen and Syria.
It’s important to remember that the “Defenders of Velayat Skies 1400” exercise was held after Iran conducted a series of exercises in response to both the “Three Brothers-2021” exercise, which took place in Baku from 12-20 September, with the goal of developing cooperation and sharing knowledge and experience between Turkey, Pakistan, and Azerbaijan’s special forces. As well as the “Indestructible Brotherhood-2021” exercise in Nakhchivan, which took place between Turkey and Azerbaijan from 5-8 October.
During the exercise, Iran also put a variety of domestically produced military products to the test, including the Talaash long-range mobile surface-to-air missile system designed to fire the Sayyad-2 missile, Joshan and Khatam air defense systems, Merac, Feth-2, Bashir, and Jerusalem radar systems, tactical information and reconnaissance systems, electro-optical systems, and electronic warfare systems.
