UK Cleared to Order Latest Version of Javelin ATGM
The United Kingdom has been cleared by the use Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) to procure up to 600 Javelin FGM-148F anti-tank guided missiles. The FGM-148F is the most advanced production variant of Javelin which entered production back in May 2020.
The UK is now cleared to purchase up to 600 Javelin FGM-148F missiles, with 12 of these described as ‘fly-to-buy missiles’ which might be considered a batch to test the lot before delivery is undertaken. The DSCA release also notes that the package will include “U.S. Government technical assistance and other related elements of logistics and program support.” The total estimated cost of the missile package is listed as $125.13 million.
While the missiles have not yet been procured they will likely be used in conjunction with the procurement of the new Javelin Lightweight Command Launch Units (LWCLUs) which was announced in early August 2022. The procurement of 513 LWCLUs had an estimated value of $300 million.
The large procurement of Javelin missiles isn’t surprising given the UK’s transfer of a considerable number of Javelin missiles and CLU from UK stocks to the armed forces of Ukraine over the past 12 months.
The 600 FGM-148F missiles will be manufactured by the Raytheon/Lockheed Martin Javelin Joint Venture, based in Orlando, FL and Tucson, AZ. In May 2022, Lockheed Martin announced their intention to double Javelin production from around 2,000 to 4,000 missiles per year in anticipation of considerable upcoming orders.
In May 2021, the British Army unveiled their Battle Group Organic Anti-Armour plan with the aim of selecting future anti-armor weapon systems in the 2030s. The Close Combat Anti-Armour Weapons is set to be the part of the plan which seeks Javelin’s replacement. The procurement of LWCLU and FGM-148F missiles likely represents a capability sustainment program which will see Javelin in service well into the 2030s while its replacement is sought.
