Nurol Makina Unveils The NMS-L 4×4 Armored Vehicle at IDEF 2023
The NMS-L 4×4 vehicle was unveiled by Turkish armored vehicle manufacturer Nurol Makina and Sanayi (Nurol Machinery and Industry), who exhibited the vehicle at the 16th International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF 2023) in Istanbul. The launch ceremony was attended by a large number of company personnel and press, particularly Nurol Makina Deputy General Manager Onur Karel and Nurol Holding Chairman of the Board Mehmet Oğuz.
The NMS-L 4X4, a shortened and lighter version of the NMS (or Yörük) 4X4, is an armored vehicle designed by the company to fill a gap in the light vehicle class. According to the company, the vehicle, which provides an unprecedented level of modularity and protection against ballistic threats, mines, and improvised explosive devices (IED) in accordance with NATO Stanag 4569 standards, provides the user with a wide range of options ranging from carrying weapon systems to combat units to reconnaissance missions.
The NMS-L 4×4 vehicle is outfitted with Unirobotics’ TRAKON 30 Medium Caliber Gun Turret, which is armed with a 30mm CANIK VENOM-LR. The VENOM LR (Low Recoil) is a ‘ground up’ complete redesign of the ADEN 30 mm Gun; a gas-operated, electrically primed, self-loading revolver weapon. The system, which has a 2,000m effective range, single shot, 225 and 1,200 rpm firing modes, can be employed with training, high explosive incendiary, and armor piercing ammunition that meets NATO standards if necessary. The vehicle’s second weapon is the ILGAR Smart Loitering Munition, which it can launch from an 8-cell launcher. This loitering munition weighs 1.5kg including the warhead and has an effective range of 20km and a cruising speed of 120km/h.
A 300hp diesel engine coupled to an automatic transmission powers this new armored vehicle, which is designed for missions in all types of geography, including harsh weather and terrain conditions ranging from -32°C to +55°C. The vehicle, which has a fully independent suspension system that enhances maneuverability even in difficult terrain, can reach a top speed of 150km/h on asphalt roads and 120km/h on unpaved roads. Furthermore, the vehicle with run-flat tires and a central tire inflation system can traverse 40% side slopes, 0.9m-wide trenches, and shallow depths of 0.9m, as well as climb 0.5m-high obstacles.
In a statement provided to an AA correspondent, Nurol Makina Deputy General Manager Anıl Karel stated that they expect NMS’s export success to continue with this new vehicle and that such a vehicle is needed based on market analysis. Karel also added that they are in the process of securing two new contracts for NMS and that they hope to add the new vehicle to their export portfolio in the near future.
