Iranian Navy Commissions the Jamaran-Class Deylaman Frigate
The Iranian Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics delivered the domestically produced Jamaran class IRIN Deylaman FFGH-78 frigate to the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy’s northern fleet as part of the Mowj project. The delivery ceremony took place on Monday, November 27, in the country’s northern port city of Bandar Anzali. Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Commander-in-Chief of the Islamic Republic of Iran Army Sayyed Abdolrahim Mousavi, and Iranian Army Naval Forces Commander Admiral Shahram Irani attended the event.
Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, stated during his speech at the occasion, “The delivery of the domestically-produced destroyer ship Deyleman of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Caspian Sea Fleet is a symbol of the country’s naval power. The Deyleman destroyer ensures the security of the country’s north. The Caspian Sea is a sea of peace and friendship, and with this ceremony, we announce the message of peace and friendship of the Iranian nation to all neighboring countries.” While stating that the Iranian Armed Forces provide permanent defense and deterrence with their efforts, Major General Bagheri also emphasized that the Naval Forces contribute significantly to the country’s defense power.
The fifth ship in the series, the IRIN Deylaman, was designed to replace Iran’s second Jamaran class frigate, Damavand. Damavand, which officially joined the Iranian Navy in March 2015, sank three years later after colliding with a seawall in the Caspian Sea. Later, the ship was rebuilt in the Bandar Anzali shipyard in collaboration with the Defense Industries Organization’s (DIO) Maritime Industries Group and Iranian Navy Factories. As a result, the Deylaman ship is additionally referred to as Damavand-2. Deylaman, named after a town in Northern Iran, has a length of 100 meters, a width of 11.1 meters and a draft of 3.25 meters, like other ships in its class. The ship, which weighs more than 1,300 tons, has a large flight deck at the stern to accommodate a Bell 214 helicopter and crew space for 130 people.
As far as can be determined from the images published by the Iranian media, the weapon systems on the Deylaman frigate include a 76mm Fajr-27 naval gun, a 30mm Kamand CIWS, six 20mm Oerlikon guns, 2 triple 324mm torpedoes, and eight Qader anti-ship missiles. In the following days, the Deylaman ship, which currently lacks SAMs and VLS systems, is anticipated to be outfitted with the short-range vertical launch system “Navab” and the medium-range Sayyad defense system. Among the ship’s sensor systems are the Mersad system, which can also perform ELINT (Electronic Intelligence) operations, and the Eagle Eye AESA radar.
