ST Engineering Wins NATO Contracts for 155mm Artillery Ammunition
In mid-June Singapore’s ST Engineering announced the signing of several substantial contracts for the delivery of munitions, including 155mm artillery shells, to NATO countries. The contracts, awarded through competitive tenders, represent a major expansion of ST Engineering’s presence in the European defense market and underline its capabilities in providing high-quality military ammunition.
ST Engineering’s Land Systems business has secured contracts with undisclosed buyers, which include the supply of NATO-standard 155mm artillery ammunition. The 155mm system stands out due to its extended-range high-explosive projectiles and modular charge systems, enabling it to engage targets effectively at ranges of up to 30km with 39 caliber guns and 39km with 52 caliber guns.
In addition to the 155mm artillery munitions, the contracts also cover the supply of 40mm rounds. ST Engineering offers an impressive catalog of 58 variants of 40mm munitions, tailored to meet the diverse operational needs of its customers. This extensive range and the company’s ability to customize munitions for specific requirements reinforce ST Engineering’s position as a leading provider of 40mm solutions.
The total value of these contracts exceeds SGD 100 million (EUR 69 million). The company’s adherence to the NATO Joint Ballistics Memorandum of Understanding and the Standardisation Agreement (STANAG) requirements ensures that its munitions are fully compatible with NATO standards, providing interoperability and reliability for allied forces. Lim Kok Ann, President of Land Systems at ST Engineering, said:
“These new contracts not only reflect our position as a trusted partner within the NATO community, but also demonstrate our defense expertise in meeting the evolving needs of modern artillery operations.”
Similarly, the 40mm munitions offered by ST Engineering include a variety of rounds such as high-explosive, practice, and specialized ammunition for different mission profiles. This versatility allows them to adapt to various combat scenarios, from training exercises to actual engagements. Such a variety of munitions is a must for armies that have to maintain both high levels of training but also stockpile large quantities of ammunition.
As NATO continues to face evolving security challenges, the advanced munitions provided by ST Engineering will play a crucial role in maintaining the alliance’s operational readiness and strategic advantage.
Back in May 2024, Rheinmetall was also awarded a big contract for 155mm artillery munitions worth EUR 300 million. However, the demand for ammunition continues to expand with the additional burden of supplying Ukraine with artillery assets and ammunition while replenishing domestic stocks.
