US Approves Sale of M142 HIMARS Sales to Croatia

The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has officially approved the sale of eight M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) to Croatia, a significant move that will enhance the nation’s defense capabilities. Valued at approximately $390 million, this deal reflects Croatia’s strategic efforts to modernize its armed forces and strengthen its role within NATO.

HIMARS, developed by Lockheed Martin, is a highly versatile and mobile artillery system designed to deliver precision strikes across a wide range of targets. The system is capable of launching various types of munitions, including the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS). With a range that extends up to 300 kilometers, depending on the munitions used, HIMARS provides precision strike capabilities.

The acquisition of HIMARS is a crucial component of Croatia’s ongoing military modernization program. As a NATO member, Croatia is committed to maintaining capable and efficient armed forces equipped with modern combat assets. Adding HIMARS to Croatia’s military arsenal will enhance its national defense capabilities and improve its interoperability with other NATO forces. This is particularly important in the current security environment in Europe, where NATO’s eastern flank has seen increased militarization in response to regional tensions, especially the renewal of Serbian aggressive posturing towards Kosovo and Bosnia amidst War in Ukraine.

The sale includes the 8 HIMARS launchers and associated equipment, training, and support. This comprehensive package ensures that the Croatian Armed Forces will be fully equipped and prepared to integrate these advanced systems into their operations. The deal also includes the procurement of various munitions, such as GMLRS unitary and alternative warheads, further expanding the range of missions that Croatia’s military can undertake with these systems.

Croatia’s decision to acquire HIMARS is part of a broader trend among European nations to invest in advanced military technologies amid rising regional security concerns. HIMARS, known for its rapid deployment and precision strike capability, will provide Croatia with a critical capability which augments its older M-92 Vulkan and APR-40 MLRS systems.
