BAE Systems Awarded $440 Million Bradley Contract
BAE Systems has been awarded a $440 million contract by the U.S. Army to produce over 200 additional M2A4 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs) including several M7A4 BFIST. This contract is part of the Army’s ongoing efforts to modernize its armored vehicle fleet and replenish stocks after sending older M2A2-ODS-SA Bradley models to support Ukraine’s military during the ongoing war with Russia.
The M2A4 variant is a key upgrade over previous models, offering enhanced survivability, mobility, and situational awareness. It features digitized electronics that improve communication and battlefield coordination within the Army’s Armored Brigade Combat Teams (ABCTs). Other improvements include an upgraded suspension system and a more powerful engine, allowing the vehicle to handle additional armor and new subsystems, such as active protection systems. These enhancements ensure the Bradley can operate effectively in a range of combat environments.
BAE Systems will produce the vehicles across its extensive U.S. industrial network, including South Carolina, Alabama, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania facilities. This production process supports U.S. military capabilities and maintains a robust manufacturing base for future armored vehicle needs.
The Bradley A4 continues to be a crucial component of US military strategy, providing the firepower, protection, and versatility necessary for modern combat. The vehicles have been deployed in numerous conflicts in the Middle East and continue their service in Ukraine. The Bradley remains one of the best IFVs in the world utilizing the newest technological advancements such as sensors and the newest ammunition for its 25mm M242 chain gun.
The US Army is also developing an M2A4E1 variant of the vehicle equipped with an Iron Fist Active Protection System (APS), an improved High Definition Forward Looking Infrared Gunner’s Sight, and an Environmental Control Unit to prevent heat stress for dismounts. The first vehicle of this type was unveiled in April 2024. The Army has also signed a deal for the modernization of the M2A3 Bradleys to the M2A4E1 standard on 5 September, 2024. The vehicles ordered in this batch will be delivered until May 2026.
