Patria Unveils New TREMOS Modular Vehicle-Mounted Mortar System
Patria unveiled its new TREMOS mortar system on Tuesday, alongside an announcement that the Finnish Army will be the first operator of the modular vehicle-mounted system with a €4.7 million order.
Introduced at the Future Mortar Systems conference in London, TREMOS uses Patria’s advanced recoil technology to allow the installation of existing mortar barrels and breeches on a large variety of vehicles. According to the company, this allows the reuse of existing mortars, shells, and ballistic tables, with the system currently cleared to use existing 120mm and 81mm smoothbore mortar shells.
TREMOS was developed in close collaboration with the Finnish Defense Forces, the launch customer of the system. “After the initial ideas were approved, it took only a year to produce the first prototype for proof-of-concept tests”, said Lauri Pauniaho, Director, Weapon Systems at Patria. “The main objective was to significantly increase the mobility of an existing mortar equipment. The recent events have highlighted the importance of mobility as the diversity of the battlefield and threat scenarios have increased”.
The Finnish Army is procuring a 120mm version of the TREMOS system for installation on its military trucks as the 120 KRH M3 mortar system, with deliveries of a “pre-series” to begin in 2025 ahead of the start of troop training in 2026. According to Jussi Järvinen, Patria’s Executive Vice President, Finland Division, the contract for the pre-series was “promptly” signed following earlier tests of the prototype TREMOS system. While Patria did not announce the price of the contract, the Finnish Defense Forces says the contract is valued at €4.7 million before value added tax.
Patria says TREMOS-equipped vehicles can open fire within 60 seconds of arrival at their firing position. The recoil system reduces the launch stresses and allows firing without the need for ground support like outriggers, allowing the vehicle to leave immediately after the last shell is fired.
The effectiveness of the recoil management system allows the TREMOS system to be installed on 4×4, 6×6, 8×8 and light tracked vehicles, with the modular integration platform allowing the system to be easily configured to optimize use of the vehicle’s internal space, or for quick moves between vehicles.
