Norwegian F-35s Begin Operations In Poland

The Royal Norwegian Air Forces for the first time in history deployed in Poland with their newest F-35 multirole fighter jets. Their assignment marks a rotation in NATO’s Enhanced Air Policing mission. Their temporary home, Krzesiny Airbase in Poznan, is home to the Polish 31st Tactical Aviation Base and its F-16 C/D Block-52 Advance+ as well as the Polish F-16 Tiger Demo Team.

The F-35, renowned for its cutting-edge stealth technology and advanced avionics, is considered one of the most sophisticated multirole combat aircraft in the world. Its deployment is a powerful signal of NATO’s readiness to employ advanced resources in the defense of member states. The jets are expected to participate in joint training exercises with Polish and other allied forces, fostering interoperability and enhancing the alliance’s ability to respond rapidly to any potential escalation. Norwegian mission will continue until 20 April 2025.

Norwegian Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram highlighted the strategic importance of the deployment, stating, “Ukraine remains in critical need of military support, with Poland as the most critical logistics hub… This way Norway contributes to ensuring that aid to Ukraine reaches its destination.”

The move comes against the backdrop of heightened security concerns in Eastern Europe, particularly in the context of Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine. Poland, a frontline NATO state, has played a pivotal role in supporting Ukraine and reinforcing the alliance’s eastern defenses. This deployment represents not only a technical demonstration of strength but also a reaffirmation of unity among NATO members during turbulent times.

Norway has also deployed its NASAMS anti-air systems to protect Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport which since February 2022 serves as the main hub for aerial deliveries of supply to Ukraine.
