China Commissions First Type 054B Next Generation Frigate

The Chinese Navy (People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN)) has recently commissioned its first Type 054B frigate, Luohe (hull number 545), during a ceremony in Qingdao on 22 Jan 2025.

The Luohe is a cutting-edge, 5,000-6,000 ton displacement frigate independently developed and constructed by China. The vessel integrates advanced stealth technology, modern combat command systems, and firepower integration capabilities as part of the next-generation warship class. According to Xinhua (the official state-run news agency of the People’s Republic of China), these innovations mark significant breakthroughs, greatly enhancing the vessel’s overall performance in maritime operations. This state-of-the-art frigate underscores China’s commitment to developing a high-tech navy and strengthening its naval defense capabilities.

The class-leading vessel was officially launched on August 26, 2023, at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai. Following its launch, the Luohe began sea trials in January 2024.

The Type 054B is a significant advancement over its predecessor, the Type 054A. The Type 054B frigate is China’s next-generation warship, featuring advanced size, technology, and capabilities. It is 147 meters long with a beam of 18 meters and a displacement of 5,000–6,000 tons, making it larger than the Type 054A. This increased size enhances stability, firepower, and allows it to carry larger helicopters like the Z-20, improving ASW (anti-submarine warfare) and reconnaissance. The frigate also uses stealth technology, including a low radar cross-section design and noise-reduction measures, making it harder to detect in combat situations.

The Type 054B is powered by an Integrated Electric Propulsion (IEP) system, offering quieter operations and better fuel efficiency for long missions. Its weapons include a 100mm naval gun, a 32-cell VLS (Vertical Launching System) for missiles, a Type 1130 CIWS (Close-In Weapon System), and HQ-10 short-range air defense missiles. With modern combat systems and firepower integration, the frigate excels in air defense, ASW, and surface warfare missions. Upgraded radar, sonar, and electronic warfare systems further enhance its detection and combat response. Designed for blue-water operations, the Type 054B highlights China’s growing naval strength and ability to safeguard its maritime interests worldwide.
