SANJAY Battlefield Surveillance System Revolutionizing the Indian Army’s Operations

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh flagged off ‘SANJAY – The Battlefield Surveillance System (BSS)’ from New Delhi on 24 January 2025. SANJAY has been indigenously and jointly developed by the Indian Army and BEL (Bharat Electronics Limited), an Indian Public Sector Unit and an aerospace and defence electronics company. It is designed to enhance real-time situational awareness, Sanjay will be deployed across all operational brigades, divisions, and corps of the Indian Army in three phases from March to October 2025. This timeline aligns with the ‘Year of Reforms’ announced by the Ministry of Defence (MoD). It is developed under the Buy (Indian) initiative and the project has been executed at a cost of Rs 2,402 crore ($277.69 million).

The SANJAY Battlefield Surveillance System (BSS) is an advanced, automated solution designed to integrate data from ground and aerial sensors to create a unified Common Surveillance Picture of the battlefield. SANJAY ensures accurate situational awareness by processing and verifying inputs, eliminating duplication, and fusing data. This system operates over a secured Army Data Network and Satellite Communication Network, enhancing battlefield transparency and enabling seamless decision-making.

Powered by a centralized web application, SANJAY provides critical insights to Command Headquarters, Army Headquarters, and the Indian Army Decision Support System. It is equipped with state-of-the-art sensors and advanced analytics that monitor vast land borders, prevent intrusions, and deliver precise intelligence. This capability transforms Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) operations into a force multiplier.

SANJAY represents a major leap towards modern, data-driven military operations with its ability to support both conventional and sub-conventional operations in a Network-Centric Environment. Its induction is set to redefine the future of the Indian Army, ensuring unmatched battlefield readiness and transparency.
