Hungary Receives First 45 Lynx Infantry Fighting Vehicles
Hungary has made progress in modernizing its Ground Forces with the delivery of the first 45 Lynx KF-41 Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs) out of the 218 units ordered from Rheinmetall. The news of the delivery was announced during the 2025 International Armoured Vehicles Conference in the UK.
The vehicles are being supplied under a €2 billion ($2.08 billion) contract signed with Rheinmetall in 2020 and include the production of 218 units in various modifications. Among these, 25 were built in Germany, while 20 were produced at Hungary’s new production facility in Zalaegerszeg. This delivery is part of Hungary’s ongoing efforts to upgrade its armored forces, which also include acquiring Leopard 2A7HU tanks and PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzers.
The second phase of Hungary’s Lynx KF-41 program involves producing 172 units entirely in Hungary. This includes specialized variants such as reconnaissance vehicles, self-propelled mortars, and evacuation vehicles, further strengthening the country’s defense capabilities.
The Lynx KF-41 Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) is a modern and versatile armored vehicle built for combat. It measures 7.2 meters in length, 3.6 meters in width, and 3.3 meters in height, weighing between 30 and 45 tons. The vehicle is designed to carry a crew of three: a commander, driver, and gunner. It can also transport up to eight soldiers, making it ideal for tactical operations. The Lynx KF-41 is powered by a 1,140-horsepower Liebherr engine, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 70 km/h with a range of 500 km. It features the Rheinmetall Lance turret with a 30mm or 35mm automatic cannon, a 7.62mm machine gun, and optional anti-tank missile launchers. The vehicle’s modular armor provides strong protection against ballistic threats, mines, and IEDs, with adjustable levels for various missions.
The 45 new Lynx KF-41 Infantry Fighting Vehicles have been assigned to Hungary’s 1st Grenadier Battalion, part of the newly established 30th Mechanized Brigade. This brigade includes three mechanized infantry battalions which are designed to deliver greater operational flexibility and effectiveness in the field.
