Germany Awards Rheinmetall €3.1 Billion Contract for Future Soldier System

On 6 February 2025, Germany’s BAAINBw awarded Rheinmetall a massive €3.1 billion ($3.2 billion) contract to supply and upgrade the “Infantry Soldier of the Future – Enhanced System” (IdZ-ES). This is the largest soldier system deal for both Rheinmetall and the German military. The contract will deliver and modernize up to 368 IdZ-ES platoon systems by 2030, equipping German troops with cutting-edge digital technology, communication gear, and protective equipment. This upgrade will enhance battlefield connectivity and ensure better coordination with vehicles like the Boxer and Puma.

The agreement includes upgrading 68 existing platoon systems to a digital standard and procuring 24 new systems, with an initial firm order worth approximately €417 million ($434.68 million) expected to be processed in the first quarter of 2025. Each platoon system includes 34 soldier units equipped with advanced IT equipment, optics, optronics, and protective gear. Rheinmetall will manage the project as the general contractor, working with over 30 sub-contractors to deliver the systems.

The modernized IdZ-ES system is based on the IdZ-ES VJTF 2023 soldier system, removing outdated components and improving communication and data exchange. It is designed to integrate with the Boxer armored transport vehicle and Puma infantry fighting vehicle. The system is also compatible with airborne platforms and supports the Bundeswehr’s “Digitization of Land-Based Operations” (D-LBO) network for enhanced connectivity.

This contract highlights Rheinmetall’s leadership in soldier system technology and the growing importance of digital and networked elements in modern military operations. The IdZ-ES systems will keep the Bundeswehr at the forefront of military technology, improving combat capabilities and operational coordination on digital battlefields. This contract will benefit the German Armed Forces by providing them with cutting-edge technology that enhances combat effectiveness and operational coordination. The integration of advanced IT equipment, optics, and protective gear will better protect soldiers and increase their battlefield awareness. Overall, the contract helps ensure that the Bundeswehr remains ready for future challenges with state-of-the-art digital capabilities.
