Italy Orders Leonardo AW249 Helicopters for Air Support and Reconnaissance
Italy is advancing the modernization of its armed forces by procuring a batch of new AW249 attack helicopters from Leonardo, aiming to replace the aging A129 Mangusta fleet. The Italian Ministry of Defense has approved an initial order of 17 helicopters, with plans to acquire a total of 48, this clears the way for the first production run of the aircraft. Deliveries will begin in 2027, enhancing Italy’s air combat capabilities. The AW249 is a next-generation attack helicopter featuring open architecture and an advanced battlefield management system. These features ensure full interoperability with other military platforms, including drones.
The helicopter’s optimized connectivity allows it to integrate into a digital warfare network, enabling real-time information sharing with both ground and air units. The helicopter features an ergonomic cockpit with high-resolution touchscreen displays and an advanced human-machine interface. This design makes piloting easier, reduces crew workload, and improves situational awareness, which is crucial in high-intensity combat.

Leonardo has produced four AW249 attack helicopters, including one prototype and three pre-production units, according to reports. These pre-production models will not enter active service but will remain with Leonardo and the Italian Army for continued testing and integration of new weapons and systems. Since November 2023, trials have included work on the TM197B 20mm three-barrel cannon developed by OTO Melara and a set of unguided rockets. Additionally, the AW249 will be equipped with Israeli Spike anti-tank missiles, enhancing its capability to engage armored vehicles and fortified targets. This testing phase ensures that the AW249 is fully optimized for future combat missions.
The AW249 attack helicopter is powered by two GE Aviation CT7-8E6 engines, each delivering 2,500 horsepower (1,860 kW). It reaches a cruise speed of 287 km/h and has a maximum range of 796 km, allowing it to perform deep-strike missions behind enemy lines. Designed for extreme environments, it can operate in scorching desert heat as well as freezing high-altitude conditions. With a maximum takeoff weight of 7,500–8,000 kg, nearly twice that of the AW129, it offers greater payload capacity for weapons and fuel, enhancing combat endurance and operational flexibility. It is equipped with powerful offensive and defensive weapons, making it ideal for close air support and air interdiction missions.
It features an integrated TM197B 20mm three-barrel cannon and six underwing hardpoints that can carry guided and unguided missiles, including 70mm rockets, infrared-guided air-to-air missiles, and radio frequency or fiber-optic guided air-to-ground missiles. For extended range, the AW249 can also carry external fuel tanks under its wings, increasing its endurance for long missions.

In terms of protection, Leonardo has incorporated advanced technologies to ensure high survivability on the battlefield. The aircraft is equipped with self-sealing fuel tanks, reducing the risk of fire in case of impact, along with reinforced armor to protect the crew. Its design includes a structure resistant to ballistic impacts, increasing the likelihood of returning safely even after sustaining damage. This investment strengthens Italy’s defense capabilities while positioning Leonardo as a major player in the global market for advanced attack helicopters.
