Denmark Aims to Enhance Military Capabilities in the Arctic and North Atlantic Regions with JUMP20 UAVs

The Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization (DALO) has signed a 10-year framework agreement with Arcturus UAV Inc., a subsidiary of the American company AeroVironment, to supply JUMP20 fixed-wing drones with vertical takeoff and landing systems.

According to AeroVironment’s press release dated February 10, 2025, the agreement’s total value is up to $181 million and includes an option to purchase additional unmanned systems. These drones will strengthen the Danish Army’s intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities and will be used in operational missions within the 1st Brigade. The first deliveries are scheduled to begin later this year.

DALO President Lieutenant General Per Pugholm Olsen expressed his satisfaction with signing the framework agreement for new joint unmanned aerial vehicles for the Danish Armed Forces. Olsen stated that the first order had been placed under the contract and emphasized that additional UAVs could be procured. He also affirmed their confidence that the unmanned systems acquired in the future would remain at the forefront of technological advancements.

The JUMP 20 is a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL), fixed-wing uncrewed aircraft designed for multi-sensor intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations. It has an endurance of over 13 hours and an operational range of 185 km (115 mi). The system does not require a runway and can be deployed within 60 minutes without additional launch or recovery equipment. With a payload capacity of up to 30 pounds, it supports various sensor options, including ARCAM 45D and long-range EO/MWIR, onboard tracking, stabilization, and video processing. The aircraft features a modular design with a standard autopilot and ground control system, allowing it to be configured according to operational and user requirements.

“JUMP 20 sets the standard for simplicity, modularity, and durability—critical attributes for reliable performance in the demanding Scandinavian terrain,” said Shane Hastings, AV’s vice president and general manager for Medium UAS. “With a combat-proven track record and over 300,000 operational flight hours, JUMP 20 stands as a best-in-class UAS, equipping the Danish Armed Forces with unmatched multi-mission capabilities to operate effectively in complex and austere environments.”

The purchase of the JUMP20 drones is part of Denmark’s $2 billion strategy to boost its military capabilities in the Arctic and North Atlantic regions. The investment, after Donald Trump said the US should assert control over Greenland, will enable Denmark to build three new Arctic ships and purchase additional long-range drones.
