Germany Closer To Procuring CAVS NEMO
In a strategic move to enhance its artillery capabilities, Germany has embarked on the procurement of the Finnish-designed Patria NEMO 120 mm self-propelled mortar system, mounted on the Patria 6×6 armored vehicle. This decision, ratified by the Bundestag’s Budget Committee in late January 2025, signifies a pivotal advancement in the Bundeswehr’s indirect fire support systems.
Jukka Holkeri, Executive Vice President, Global, Patria, said in a statement that:
“Patria is very pleased to see Germany signing the first national CAVS variants development and qualification agreement. The 120 mm turreted mortar variant adds totally new performance to the international CAVS programme, and we trust that other participants of the programme will be very interested in this advanced capability. The development and qualification of these new CAVS variants will be done in close co-operation with the German industry, and the future serial production will be realised with our earlier published industrial partners KNDS, FFG and JWT.”
The initiative, part of the Future Short-Range Indirect Fire System program, aims to modernize Germany’s artillery units by integrating advanced mortar systems. The initial contract, valued at €50 million, encompasses the acquisition of two vehicles in combat version with the NEMO mortar system and a specialized variant APC configured as a command vehicle among others. These units are slated for rigorous testing and adaptation to meet the specific operational requirements of the German Army. The first prototype is anticipated to be delivered within a few months post-contract signing, with the subsequent units expected within 18 months. Comprehensive qualification trials are projected to conclude by the end of 2027.

The Patria NEMO (New Mortar) system is a turreted, remote-controlled 120 mm mortar renowned for its versatility and rapid deployment capabilities. It boasts a high rate of fire, with a theoretical maximum of 10 rounds per minute, and an effective range reaching up to 10 kilometers, contingent on the ammunition utilized. The system’s adaptability allows for integration across various platforms, including wheeled and tracked vehicles, naval vessels, and even standard 40-foot containers, thereby offering a flexible solution for diverse operational scenarios.
This procurement aligns Germany with the multinational Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) program, which includes Finland, Latvia, and Sweden. The collaboration is poised to foster interoperability among participating nations and stimulate shared technological advancements. The German defense industry stands to benefit significantly, with companies such as ESG Elektroniksystem- und Logistik-GmbH, a subsidiary of Hensoldt, playing a crucial role in the system’s integration and customization. Modifications tailored to the Bundeswehr’s specifications encompass the installation of the MG5 universal machine gun, ROSY smoke grenade launchers, advanced night operation equipment, and integration with the ADLER fire control system. Additionally, the vehicles will be configured to comply with German road traffic regulations, ensuring seamless mobility within domestic infrastructure.
Upon successfully completing the qualification phase, Germany plans to expand its arsenal with an order of 45 additional NEMO mortar systems and 12 command vehicles, targeting delivery by the end of 2029. This strategic enhancement of Germany’s artillery capabilities not only bolsters national defense but also exemplifies the efficacy of international collaboration in defense technology development.
