Royal Netherlands Navy Unveils Advanced Combat Support Ship, HNLMS Den Helder

On 22 February, the Royal Netherlands Navy officially unveiled its new Combat Support Ship (CSS), HNLMS Den Helder, marking a significant milestone in the country’s naval modernization efforts. Princess Catharina-Amalia, the heir to the Dutch throne, officiated the christening ceremony at Damen Naval’s shipyard in Vlissingen. This event was particularly historic, as it was the first time a new naval vessel had been christened in the Netherlands since 2014. The ship’s construction is part of the Dutch government’s broader initiative to enhance its maritime capabilities and ensure the Royal Netherlands Navy remains a formidable force in both combat and humanitarian operations.

The construction of Den Helder began in June 2021, with key milestones such as the launch of a major section in April 2022 and the initiation of sea trials in November 2024. Built by Damen Naval, the ship integrates advanced technologies for fuel supply, transport, and replenishment-at-sea (RAS), making it an essential asset for extended naval missions. The ship is designed to operate with a core crew of 76 personnel, but it also has accommodations for up to 80 additional personnel, allowing for mission-specific flexibility. The HNLMS Den Helder is designed to play a crucial logistical role within the Dutch naval fleet. With the ability to support a task force of six vessels, it carries over 8 million liters of fuel, including aviation fuel and diesel, ensuring sustained operations at sea. Additionally, the vessel is equipped with a Role 2 medical facility, which includes an operating room, an intensive care unit, and various treatment areas, allowing for medical support in both combat scenarios and humanitarian missions. The ship’s design also emphasizes flexibility, with a spacious deck capable of accommodating helicopters and additional cargo, further increasing its operational versatility.

Beyond its primary role in combat support, the Den Helder is also expected to contribute significantly to humanitarian missions and disaster relief efforts. Its ability to transport supplies, fuel, and medical aid makes it a valuable asset in global peacekeeping and crisis response. The vessel is also designed to operate within NATO frameworks, ensuring seamless coordination with allied naval forces during joint operations. The Den Helder is expected to be fully operational by October 2025, after completing its sea trials and final equipment installations. Once deployed, it will enhance the Royal Netherlands Navy’s global reach and operational efficiency, reinforcing the country’s commitment to maritime security and international defense cooperation.
