Morocco Receives First AH-64E Apache Attack Helicopters

The Royal Moroccan Air Force has officially received its first batch of AH-64E Apache attack helicopters, significantly enhancing its military capabilities. On 3 March 2025, six AH-64E Apaches arrived at the 7th Air Base in Khouribga, Morocco. The country placed an order for 24 Apache helicopters in June 2020 under a $440 million contract, following a request made in late 2019. The agreement also includes an option to acquire an additional 12 helicopters from Boeing.

Production of these advanced attack helicopters began in November 2023. As part of the deal, Morocco will also receive a range of powerful weaponry, including 551 Hellfire air-to-surface missiles, 200 AIM-92H Stinger air-to-air missiles, and 558 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) precision-guided rocket kits. GE Aviation is supplying 48 T700-701D turboshaft engines and spare parts for the new fleet. The acquisition of the AH-64E Apaches marks a significant step in Morocco’s ongoing efforts to modernize its defense forces and strengthen its air combat capabilities.

In 2021, the Royal Moroccan Air Force (RMAF) sent pilots and technicians for specialized training to operate and maintain the AH-64E Apache helicopters. To support the new fleet, General Electric Aviation will supply 48 T700-701D turboshaft engines along with spare parts. Additionally, Longbow Limited Liability Company, a joint venture between Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, will provide AN/APG-78 Longbow radars, enhancing the helicopters’ targeting and combat capabilities.

The AH-64E Apache is a highly advanced attack helicopter designed for superior combat performance. It features a tandem-seat cockpit, allowing a pilot and co-pilot/gunner to operate its advanced weapon systems efficiently. Powered by two General Electric T700-701D turboshaft engines, it can reach speeds of up to 293 km/h (182 mph) and has a combat range of approximately 480 km (298 miles).

The Apache is equipped with a 30mm M230 chain gun, capable of firing 625 rounds per minute, along with four weapon hardpoints that can carry Hellfire missiles, Stinger air-to-air missiles, and Hydra 70 rocket pods. Its AN/APG-78 Longbow radar provides superior targeting and tracking capabilities, allowing the helicopter to engage multiple targets simultaneously, even in challenging weather conditions. The AH-64E also features an advanced composite airframe, making it highly durable and resistant to damage in combat. With its cutting-edge avionics, enhanced digital connectivity, and the ability to control drones, the Apache remains one of the most powerful and versatile attack helicopters in the world.

The acquisition of the Apaches is part of Morocco’s broader equipment procurement program, which also includes the latest Lockheed Martin F-16 Block 70/72 Fighting Falcons. These new fighter jets will replace the aging Mirage F1 and Northrop F-5E/F Tiger II aircraft while strengthening Morocco’s air force alongside the F-16C/Ds received in 2011.
