South Korea to Export 180 More K2 Tanks to Poland in $6.2 Billion Deal

South Korea is set to sign a major defense deal with Poland, agreeing to export 180 additional K2 Black Panther tanks for $6.2 billion. Government officials confirmed the agreement on March 9, 2025, stating that the deal is expected to be finalized by April 2025. This contract strengthens the growing defense partnership between South Korea and Poland, as Poland continues modernizing its military amid rising security concerns in Europe.

The K2 Black Panther is a highly advanced main battle tank with powerful firepower, advanced armor, and cutting-edge technology, making it a key asset for Poland’s defense forces. With this latest purchase, Poland is expanding its K2 tank fleet, further solidifying its military capabilities. The deal also highlights South Korea’s rising role as a major global arms exporter.

The new deal follows a $12.4 billion defense contract signed in August 2022. Under that deal, Poland received its first batch of 180 K2 tanks, 212 K9 howitzers, and 48 FA-50 fighter jets. The deliveries from the 2022 agreement are ongoing, as Poland continues to modernize its armed forces in response to growing security concerns, especially due to the conflict in Ukraine. With its latest order, Poland is expanding its K2 tank fleet, while South Korea reinforces its role as a key defense supplier. As Poland seeks to boost its military power, South Korea remains proactive in exporting advanced weapons systems, particularly the K2 Black Panther tank, known for its cutting-edge technology and battlefield capabilities.

The K2 Black Panther is a modern main battle tank with advanced firepower, protection, and mobility. It has a low-profile design with composite and modular armor, providing a strong defense against enemy attacks. An active protection system (APS) helps detect and neutralize incoming threats like missiles and rockets. The tank is armed with a 120mm smoothbore gun with an autoloader, allowing rapid and precise firing. It also has a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun and a 12.7mm heavy machine gun for engaging infantry and light vehicles. Its fire control system ensures high accuracy, even when moving. Powered by a 1,500-horsepower diesel engine, the K2 reaches speeds of 70 km/h (43 mph) on roads. It features an advanced suspension system that adjusts ride height, improving mobility on rough terrain and in water crossings. For battlefield awareness, the K2 has a battle management system for real-time data sharing with allied forces. It also includes thermal imaging and advanced optics, ensuring effective operation in low-visibility conditions.

This second tranche of K2s will further strengthen Poland’s military by enhancing its armored capabilities, improving defense readiness amid regional security threats. It also boosts military modernization and fosters a strategic partnership with South Korea.
